This week, Ira Sternberg spoke with Mark Shunock, founder of The Space, Vegas’ community driven, charity-based arts complex. In this 30-minute episode of Talk About Las Vegas, Shunock talks about The Space’s new event, Wine Wednesdays, featuring a variety of programming complete with wine tastings (sommelier-led tasting experiences) from Foley Family Wines; the 8th anniversary of Mondays Dark,Vegas’ premiere variety show for a cause (twice a month a local non-profit benefits from an eclectic cast of performing guests, including musical acts and stars from Hollywood and The Strip); how the complex was built and became a magnet for all kinds of shows; why they were able to live stream during the pandemic and keep performers working; and its future plans, including possible expansion.
Shunock, founder of The Space, is a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and a former member of the Canadian Hockey League. After his hockey days ended, he spent almost 10 years living in New York City performing on America’s premiere stages. He earned a Best Supporting Actor Helen Hayes Award nomination for for his performance as Timon in Disney’s The Lion King. He recently starred in the smash hit Rock of Ages playing at the Venetian/Palazzo and as the MC in the sexy smash Magic Mike Live at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. He is currently the in-arena host for the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League and for Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing.
The Space is Vegas’ Community Driven, Charity Based Arts Complex consisting of a 3,000 square foot of raw performance/event space, Black Box Theatre, rehearsal studio, a podcast recording studio and a piano bar with unique views of The Strip. Since opening, The Space has hosted Tony-award winners, Grammy-award winners, private parties, comedy showcases, fashion shows to birthday parties.
