If you’re looking for a real sign that Las Vegas has entered a new era, it’s not just the Arts District in Downtown Las Vegas, or the arrival of major league sports teams here, or even the fine culinary experiences that have transformed the Strip. The new era is also defined as an investment of big city culture and a commitment to a community often over looked: the grand opening (December 9) of the West Las Vegas Library, a 1,178 sq. ft. facility that will be become a dynamic hub for literacy, technology, small-business development, and community in the Historic Westside.
I got a chance to check out the library (pre-opening) and It’s the kind of structure and promise that will not only be a source of pride and (and more importantly, utilization) for the local community, but it will attract residents for other areas of Las Vegas and Clark County, as well as visitors who want a look at what a modern library looks like and offers.
From the news release: “Spanning two stories at 41,000+ square feet, the library’s spectacular new home is more than double the size of its predecessor. An architectural gem, it fulfills a goal of significantly increasing opportunities for local residents through robust children’s programming, literacy services, interactive technology, job skills development, and cultural celebration.”
The new space also offers installations from local artists and creators, including specialized “book benches” that depict various classic literature titles and inspirational quotes and phrases.
There’s also a stunning timeline mural, which illustrates the rich history of the Historic Westside.
On December 9, look for major family-friendly events on opening day.
If you can’t make the grand opening, definitely make plans to check it out (and check out some books-they're all new!
